As a business owner, you might be familiar with the resolution to be less distracted on social media, finally start / review / finish that business marketing plan while increasing your sales goals.
Or some combination of the above and more!
This year, before your resolutions fly right out the window, let’s try a different approach and get the expert tip from award winning Business Coach, owner and local at our Workshop 38 space, Vanessa Moore.

Workshop 38: Thanks for taking the time to chat to us Vanessa. Let’s get to it. Businesses aim to grow and the new year seems to be a good time to make changes to achieve that growth.
Do you have any advice on how to create resolutions that are realistic and achievable so we don’t get disappointed?
Vanessa: I’d like to start off by saying that resolutions actually have a negative connotation to them. I remember growing up everybody would make new year’s resolutions and even as a young adult I’d make new year’s resolutions and within a day, a week, a month, they just disappeared. The way I see it, it’s better to reflect on the year that’s just been. Think about where you could have been better, where you could have done better, where you could have improved. Focus on positive things that happened. Then reflect on any of the negatives and think about the opportunities that came out of them.
Have a plan!
The most important element of running a business regardless of what kind of business is that you have to have a plan. When I work with my clients we plan in 90-day segments because everything runs in quarters. Quarterly planning sets a re-realistic period of time in which you can achieve a goal. 90 days is a really great block of time. It gives you the opportunity to work through, understand week by week what you need to be doing and then break the plan down to the point where you even work those tasks into your daily routine.
Make sure the plan is achievable
Make sure your plan is achievable. Don’t set too many. Three, maybe four good, strong strategies, goals, whatever you want to call them, in a quarter that you’re actively working on is enough. There’s going to be items that are going to be long-term goals where you need to break them down into their parts and you look at them, work on them actively quarter by quarter so that by the end of the year you’ve worked your way through and achieved something that you’ve set your mind to. When you write your plan, put down what’s important for the next quarter on that plan so that you’re still looking at it from a subliminal perspective. It’s there, it’s in your mind’s eye and you’re still thinking, “Okay, well I’m working on this, but I know that that’s coming.” That way if something appears in this quarter for the next goal, you’d grab the opportunity because you know it’s there.

Workshop 38: What are some of the most effective “first things first” you find have helped businesses to set strong foundations to achieve their plans or milestones?
Vanessa: Well, the biggest one is vision, a lot of people lose their vision. When they start a business, they have this great idea, they have this great mindset, they know what they want, and then they get so stuck working in the business, being the technician, that they lose sight of that vision. It’s really important to ensure that you are working on your business, not just in it.
Working on the business versus in the business
Now, the difference between the two of them is working in your business is generating the income. It’s doing the work. Whether that’s hairdressing, plumbing, being a business coach, or running an event facility, that’s working in the business. Working on it is sitting down and looking at your numbers and understanding your financials. It’s looking at your marketing plan and understanding where you’re at from a marketing perspective. Where’s your lead flow coming from? Who are your customers? How often are you speaking to them?

Workshop 38: What advice do you have for businesses to keep motivated and working towards milestones?
Vanessa: Well, firstly I’d say get yourself a coach (laughs). So realistically, you know, we only need to be accountable to ourselves, but sometimes we let ourselves get away with stuff. Reward and recognition for yourself is one way to hold yourself accountable. Why not create a buddy system where you know somebody else in business and you say to them, “Look, mate, I’m going to do this, this, and this, and if I don’t, I give you permission to hold me accountable.”
Be aligned with your Vision
It’s very easy to say it and sometimes it’s really difficult to do it. Hence, the reason why your goals need to be set in line with your vision. Make sure you really want it, make sure it’s what you’re looking for. If it is and you absolutely believe in it, then you will do it. I find that business owners who need accountability are people that are easily distracted, people who can get caught up in the urgent, people who don’t actually have a good, strong strategic plan.
Find a support network
Now, that’s not a 10-page business plan that you need to write for a bank or someone lending you money or anything like that. It’s just a one-page document. It’s very simple. You plan your weekly tasks and your weekly time around ensuring that you’re working on as well as in your business, with your plan in front of you, showing you what you need to be doing this week. If you’re struggling to be accountable to yourself, then find a business coach. Find a group coaching situation where there’s a level of accountability. There’s lots of them around. Be mindful that you set goals that they are real and achievable in some way and that you totally believe in them. That’s the most important part.

Workshop 38: Lastly, do you have any general advice that you always give businesses, at whatever stage of their development?
Vanessa: You have to be passionate about what it is that you do. You have to love what you do. You need to be able to smile when you get out of bed in the morning and enjoy what it is that you’re going to do for the next eight or 10 hours. You also need to ensure that you have downtime.
You also need to ensure that you’re healthy. A business without a dream has no life. Business is supposed to give us life. Business is supposed to give us a choice. That’s why we choose to be business owners and live with the pressure of what it is that owning a business is all about. It’s never easy. It should be fun. Yes, it gets tough, things don’t look great, but remember there’s always someone out there that can help you. Make sure that you take time out for yourself, make sure that you are having fun, make sure that you are enjoying it.
Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help
It takes courage to ask for help. Some people are ashamed that they are in a position where they need it so they don’t reach out. These people are sometimes the ones that fail and have to close the doors. That makes me sad. I have called a few people in recent months only to find the phone disconnected and the website has disappeared. If only they had talked to someone, asked for help, perhaps they would still be open and working. So always reach out and ask for help whenever you need it.
